Mt. Lebanon residents and programs benefiting Mt. Lebanon residents are not being provided with adequate ice time at the Mt. Lebanon Recreation Center. This issue directly impacts the ability of Mt. Lebanon youth hockey players to receive fair access to a Mt. Lebanon recreation facility.

If you agree with the following points, please sign this petition and share with fellow Mt. Lebanon residents:

Reason

1. Any discussion regarding placing turf over the studio ice, now or in the future, is unacceptable.

  • There are 19 outdoor fields used by the school district and recreation department. Currently, Mt. Lebanon youth hockey players split one rink and one-quarter rink across all age levels from learn to skate to high school; in addition to figure skating, and non-Mt. Lebanon affiliated organizations such as the Chartiers Valley Colts hockey team(s); and the South Fayette Lions hockey team(s). Mt. Lebanon youth hockey players are often relegated to the studio rink and it is used by them and others year round.

2. Mt. Lebanon youth hockey players should have access to hockey programming and/or camps during summer months.

  • Figure skating has been afforded what can only be described as carte-blanche authority over ice time during the summer months. This leaves little to no opportunity for youth hockey programs or camps, despite qualified instructors having expressed interest in the same.

 3. Organizations associated with Mt. Lebanon, or programs benefiting Mt. Lebanon residents should receive ice time priority.

  • Currently, Mt. Lebanon's municipal rink services non-Mt.Lebanon residents during the fall/winter months. Mt. Lebanon provides ice time to high school teams from Chartiers Valley and South Fayette rather than providing access to quality developmental programs to younger Mt. Lebanon hockey players.

4. When the rink undergoes its impending chiller replacement, a second full sheet of ice is needed.

  • A second full sheet of ice would benefit Mt. Lebanon's hockey community as well as all Mt. Lebanon residents. The ice rink is the only profitable recreation facility in Mt. Lebanon. Ice time sold generates money for the entirety of the municipality.

Why people sign

My son is currently a hornet and the studio ice time has more than adversely impacted there season. Amateur hockey programs with 2 sheets of ice have a far greater advantage for all the reasons mentioned in the petition. We have exclusively tried out for the hornets in years past but this year will be trying out for other program’s pursuant to two sheets of ice or more in some cases. We would hate to leave MLHA but the studio rink in todays competitive youth hockey market is a major downside to the program and community.

Because we have to grow the game of hockey within the Hornets organization. The players need more ice time if they want to compete with other rivals. Other programs get multiple slots a week on full ice while we are Luke to get one on the studio.
