In 1826 a Ruzafa's teacher, Cayetano Ripoll, was accused of not believing in Catholic dogmas, was condemned to be executed by hanging and later burned as a heretic. Many people will say that a lot of time has passed of that, 190 years, but today, in Europe, there're still laws against blasphemy.

I was born in Spain, I'm atheist and in my country there are laws against blasphemy disguised as laws of protection of religious sentiment, although we're a non confessional country, in practice that means that we aren't a secular country either.

These laws prevent anyone can pronounce against religion with safely, limiting the freedom of expression of atheists and, in many cases, leads them to at least face a court, violating Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Universal Declaration of Human Rights which, remember, all the member countries of the EU have signed and that the EU has made its own through Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.

We also know that in many EU member countries there're laws against blasphemy, inheriting laws of those that allowed the murder of Cayetano Ripoll. Today an atheist cannot be sentenced to death in the EU, but can be sentenced to prison, Malta is a good example, only in 2012 imposed ninety-nine sentences for blasphemy.

We need the European Union pronounces against such laws, laws against blasphemy, which, let us remember, bring those who pronounce against religion in Europe to prison, the same laws that in other countries can lead to death.

Raison

There is a very clear simil. The basis of freedom of expression is that every citizen has the right to express what he/she thinks, but what he/she thinks has no rights, likewise, every citizen has the right to profess the religion he/she wants, but his/her religion has no rights. When a country denies its citizens rights to give them to religion it's violating human rights.

And it is necessary for the European Union to say it loud and clear.
