Bearing about 70 signatures, opposing the construction of a new shopping centre in the province of Monza and Brianza

The petitioner calls for the cancellation of the project for a new shopping centre for the ‘redevelopment’ of a run-down area of Brianza, which is occupied by the former Medaspan furniture plant. The petitioner adduces the following arguments to support this position: a) the high air pollution of the area in question, which has some of the worst air pollution in Europe; b) the increase in road traffic which the new centre would attract; c) the impact on public health due to the increased concentration of carcinogenic substances in the air; d) a possible violation of the environmental impact assessment directive, which provides for the complete ‘screening’ of projects of this kind; e) the socio-economic impact of opening the new centre and closing it down again if necessary, due to the fact that the area is already saturated with competitors.
