Petition addressed to: Maltese Parliament
By introducing a social media ban for under-16s, Malta can create a safer online environment, protect children's wellbeing, and ensure that technology supports healthy development rather than harming it.
Social media platforms should verify users' ages and prevent children under 16 from creating accounts. Companies that fail to enforce the law should face penalties. This will help protect young people from online harm, cyberbullying, and addiction while supporting their mental wellbeing and education.
Reason
Children under 16 are still developing emotionally and socially, so limiting access to social media can help safeguard their mental health, wellbeing, and safety online.
Why now?
Because children's screen time, exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and social media-related mental health problems have reached unprecedented levels, making stronger protections urgent.
Following the EU's recommendations on the restrictions of social media use for minors, our MP's and relevant authorities should act quickly and swiftly on this matter.
