Petition to have the Lu Yu sculture moved into the Chinese Gardens (in Santa Lucia)

Petition addressed to: Marsascala Local Council and/or Major of Region

Summary: Maltese Culture and Heritage should be respected. The massive sculpture of Lu Yu, currently prominently displayed in the main square and first-point of entry into the region, disrespects historic Marsascala (having historic Phoenician and Roman origins, not Chinese) and disrespects the traditional Maltese fishermen and villagers who are associated with this region. Marsascala remained a tiny fishing port until the advent of the second World War and originally had approximately 50 residents. The Lu Yu sculpture is more appropriate in the Chinese Gardens, located in Santa Lucia.

Details:
In July 2026, the massive 'Lu Yu Silk Road Tea Break' bronze statue was erected in the main square of Marsaskala.  
This statue commemorates Lu Yu, a Tang Dynasty Chinese scholar .
It is a massive bronze sculpture which occupies a prominent place in the square, just opposite the Parish church and is located in the first point of entry Into Mskala from the neighboring town of Zabbar.

Mskala was established in the early 1900s and has historically been a fishing port and 🎣 village . The original resident population only consisted of approximately some 50 residents , although it has grown now exponentially.
-Monuments all around Malta villages and towns traditionally honor local historical prominent figures and/or figures associated with the region and/or culture.
-It would be more appropriate to erect a monument in this square honoring and recognizing traditional Maltese fishermen and/or a historical regional figure.

The Lu Yu statue is out of place, has nothing to do with M'skala or the Maltese culture, and it is more suitable in the Chinese Gardens located in Santa Lucia.

The signers of this petition request that this Lu Yu sculpture be more appropriately re-positioned into the Chinese Gardens.
