Why This Matters to Me

For over 15 years, we’ve cared for a colony of street cats in Blanca, Murcia, not out of obligation, but out of compassion. These animals didn’t choose to be abandoned. They didn’t ask to live on the streets. But they deserve safety, dignity, and kindness, just like any living being.

Instead of support, I’ve faced hostility. We’ve been fined, intimidated by police, and watched helplessly as cats I cared for were poisoned, disappeared, or attacked. The mayor continues to threaten more fines, while the town turns a blind eye to cruelty.

In 2023, Spain passed a national law to protect animals, including strays. But Blanca refuses to apply it. They cling to outdated local rules and punish those who step up to help. This is not just unfair, it’s inhumane.

I’m not asking for praise. I’m asking for justice. For the cats who suffer silently and for the caregivers who are treated like criminals. For a town that should be better than this.
